Garrison-Jones Elementary School's mission statement is: At Garrison-Jones, we believe that the purpose of education is to develop the whole child through a broad- based curriculum which fosters a positive self-concept, creativity, self discipline values, and life skills. Garrison-Jones derived its name from two pioneer families of Dunedin: the Garrison family and the Jones family. Garrison-Jones started in August of 1990 on double sessions with San Jose Elementary School. On February 4, 1991, Garrison-Jones opened the doors of its brand new building on Garrison Road. Garrison-Jones resembles a small college campus with twelve buildings connected by covered walkways surrounding a grassy courtyard. Garrison-Jones has a student population of 800 in grades pre-k through fifth. In addition to physical education, art, and music, students who qualify can also receive speech, SLD (Specific Learning Disabilities), and GP (Gifted Program) services. Garrison-Jones has many groups and clubs for students to
join. They include Fourth Grade Chorus, Fifth Grade Chorus, Computer Club,
Gifted Art, Strings, Chess Club, Science Club, Student Council, Safety
Patrol, Multicultural Club, STEP, and DARE. There are events where parents, grandparents, and other citizens come to celebrate the lives and successes of children. On the last Friday of each month, Round Up is held. Round Up is an outdoor assembly that recognizes the accomplishments of our outstanding citizens, musicians, athletes, and artists. Pioneer Day is an annual event held for the children to have fun. It is a time when PTA raises money for all of the many activities it provides for the students. Our Winter and Spring Concerts are events that are well attended because of the superb performances of the students. Our Adopt-a-Class Program gives the business community the opportunity to provide financial support to the school. Parents as well as the community are also invited to discuss their jobs for the annual Career Day sponsored by the guidance department. With hard work on the part of the teachers and students, Garrison-Jones has been a Five Star School. It has also received the Golden School Award every year. We, at Garrison-Jones, are very proud of the fact that we have earned an "A" grade for each of the three years that the state of Florida has been grading schools. Under the leadership of two principals, Tony Reidy and Karen
Buckles, and with the dedication of the entire faculty and staff, Garrison-Jones
has provided many students with an excellent educational foundation which
has enabled them to meet the challenges presented to them in middle school,
high school, and beyond. |
